Students seeking reprieve from the rigors of a demanding high school curricula often wish to “vacate” to a summer of relaxation. Progressive families know better and are choosing to supplant summer vacation with effective academic enrichment.

According to a 2011 RAND Corporation report, the average summer learning loss in math and reading for American students equates to one month per year, cumulatively! College admissions professionals view summer academic enrichment programs as a “strength” to an applicant’s’ profile. Parents should view summer as a period for continued learning versus a time to allow children to “veg-out.”

Our students deserve summer experiences that introduce global perspectives and career development that so often skips underrepresented communities. As such, we set out to create summer academic experiences that enrich and embolden students on campuses of the world’s leading colleges and universities.

With Hampton University (HU) as a partner, last year we launched the D.R.E.A.M. Digital Media Summer Experience. For two-weeks, 32 academic all-stars were immersed into the world of digital media including software-app coding and five days of SAT Preparation, taught by Sylvan Learning Systems. Our academic experience culminated with a final media business plan competition as well as a campus-wide “STEPSHOW” demonstration presented by our participants and taught by HU’s Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

As for results, nearly 90% of participants indicated that they are now interested in applying to Hampton University. What’s more, 97% of parents/guardians felt the program “somewhat/definitely” prepared their child for the upcoming academic school year.

Over the next few months, we will introduce a number of new programs for your family’s consideration. The goal is to provide youth with the opportunity to expand their academic Excellence, Drive and Confidence in learning during the summer months.
